Date: 07-07-02 Archive: Anywhere It was a hot and sunny day. It was the sort of day that would find most people sprawled out next to a swimming pool with a cold glass of lemonade. In apartment 37 in Georgetown, Fox Mulder was in the middle of an important task. "Can you say Dada?" Mulder asked slowly. He lay on his stomach on the living room floor. In front of him sat a baby boy with wispy-red hair. Scully was out performing an autopsy and Mulder thought it was the perfect opportunity to teach William his first word. "Come on Will! Say Dada!" Mulder said enthusiastically. Will looked' at his father with big blue eyes. The baby leaned forward with a toothy grin and grabbed fistfuls of Mulder's hair and began to pound on his head like it was a bongo. Will let out a shriek of laughter. "No, no, Will! Mulder pulled the baby away from him and rolled over sitting Will up on his chest. "You are as stubborn as your mother." Will' threw himself forward and grabbed Mulder by the nose. "ill oo dotta et doe of my dose." Mulder pulled the tiny hand way from his face and blinked back stinging tears. He had to admit it. The kids got a grip. "It's easy son, just say Dada." All that comes out is eek and gurrrl. Mulder was not making any headway with his son. He gave a sigh of frustration and looked around the room. His eyes lit up with an idea as he caught sight of three stuffed animals on the sofa. "Will, see the funny toys. Lets pretend the giraffe is Uncle Langley, the teddy bear is Uncle Byers and the frog is Uncle Frohike. Mulder held up a green frog with the bulging eyes. "Tell Uncle Frohike who I am." Will stretches out his little hands and nabs the stuffed animal from his father. "No Will! Don't eat Uncle Frohike's eyes off!" Mulder grabbed the frog from the baby, or rather tried too. Will, pulled back on the frog for all he's worth. "Will (grunt) you cannot (grunt) eat Uncle Frohike." Mulder finally got the frog away from the baby. Will spit out a string of baby jabber that Mulder knows' is his own version of swear words. It's obvious to Mulder that the frog is not going to work. "Let's try talking to Uncle Byers. You like the Uncle Byers bear don't you Will. Now say Dada to Uncle Byers." William grabbed the bear and with a grunt tossed it over his shoulder. "Okay, so you don't like Uncle Byers either. Mulder placed Will on his lap and picked up the giraffe. "Hey, Will! Look at Uncle Langley!" Mulder said holding up the orange and brown toy. "Why don't you tell Uncle Langley who I am." Mulder said making the stuffed animal do a little dance. Will looked' at the giraffe a moment than up at his father. Mulder's eyebrows raised in hope. All at once the baby grabbed the toy and started hitting Mulder in the head with it. "Ouch, Will stop tha...!" Will let out a fit of giggles at the amusing sight. Mulder finally got a hold on the flying giraffe before it made contact with his head again and took it away from Will. "Son, you're rough on your old man." Mulder said as he wiped the stinging tears from his eyes. Mulder scooped up Will and put him in his swing. He pulled him over to the couch where he was sitting. "Now son say Dada, see its not hard, Dada." Will turned' red and licked his lips. "Gee Will I thought only your mother did that!" Mulder went from asking to pleading with Will. "Come on son, its me your old Dada." Mulder got up and went into the kitchen and returned with a cookie. "Will I know you like cookies, say Dada and I'll let you have a cookie." Will looked at Mulder with his Scully-blue eyes, and quickly grabbed the cookie from Mulder, and stuffed it into his mouth. He then grinned, a cookie and toothy grin at Mulder. "Will! You're not playing fair. You have to earn the cookie, although you would fit in at the bureau quite well." Mulder let out a deep sigh and decided to try another tactic. He took William from the swing and held him close to his face. "Will watch daddy, Dada, see Dada, Mulder emphasized each letter. Will turned beet-red and stiffened his back until he almost slid out of Mulder's grasp, Mulder caught him just in time. "Will! You have to work with me here. We want to surprise mom when she gets home. Say Dada." Will let out a sting of words that sounded like 'Love Me Tender', played backwards. Just when Mulder thought he had hit rock bottom emotionally, it got worse. A click was heard and he knew Scully was just on the other side of the door. With pleading eyes he whispered to the child, "Dada, got it Will, Dada." Scully opened the door just as Mulder stood up holding Will. Scully put down her keys and bag. She turned to her two men when William shouted, "Mama!" Scully looked at Will with wide-eyes that soon filled with tears. "Mulder did you hear that! He said Mama." Mulder swallowed what little pride he had left and blurted out, "I taught him that!" Scully stood on tiptoes and grabbed Mulder by the head and kissed him for all he was worth. Then she stepped back and wrapped her arms around his waist and rested her head on his chest. Softly saying "Thank you." Mulder looks down at William with a grin and mouths, "Thanks buddy." ~ The End ~
